With the increasing number of car
owners, car thefts are also increasing rapidly. Car thefts seem to occur
with greater frequency where large number of cars are parked for long hours,
specially in places like colleges, shopping centers, sporting events, and
large apartment complexes. Car thefts can occur anytime, so be careful about
your car's security. Here are some tips that you can use to avoid being the
victim of car theft:
Try to be a smart parker:
Parking of your vehicle at a right place
can really help you from car thefts. Always remember to park your car in
well-light areas. Parking your car in a high traffic area is also a bad
idea, as there is no one to attend your car. You can also consider to park
your car at a paid parking area with a proper attendant if you are concerned
about your car.
Invest in safety accessories:
Buying a steering lock is a wise
decision, as it will make the car thief think twice before stealing your
car. Vehicle Identification Numbers are another option to safeguard your car
from thefts, these numbers are actually etched into cars at various places
inside and outside the car, including windows and other major parts. And do
remember, smart thieves always know where to look for vehicle identification
numbers, and might avoid stealing a car with VIN etching. The parts with VIN
etching are harder to tamper with and make it easy for the police to trace
it once stolen. So, VIN etching is another good option.
Leave only the ignition/door key with the parking attendant:
If
you park your vehicle in an attended lot, do remember to leave only the
ignition and door key with the attendant. And in case if your trunk and
glovebox use the same key as the door, have one of them changed. Don't give
the attendant easy access to your glovebox and trunk. Upon returning, check
the spare tire, battery tires and be sure they are the same as those you had
when you parked.
Electronic security systems:
Audio alarms with sound loud warnings
are one of the latest trends in upgrading the security systems of the car.
Optional sensors include motion, tampering, glass breakage, and Towing.
Automatic engine disable and panic buttons features are also recommended.
Think of the Tow-away:
Sometimes we make mistake in understanding
that the car is being Towed or its being stolen. If you park with your tires
facing the curb, it will make it more difficult for anyone to Tow your car
away. Using an emergency brake in the car, will also prevent the car from
being Towed.
